PDR

Paintless Dent Repair

Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) is a highly skilled and efficient method of reshaping sheet metal to remove dents, dings, and creases without the need for repainting or body fillers. Originating from the old German technique, PDR is a meticulous process that involves carefully massaging the damaged area from the inside out, restoring the vehicle’s body to its original form without compromising the paint.

This technique is ideal for minor dents caused by hail, door dings, or small impacts, where the paint hasn’t been damaged. Since PDR avoids repainting and sanding, it preserves the original factory finish, maintaining the value and integrity of your vehicle. Our technicians are highly trained in this art, ensuring precision and exceptional results every time.

How paintless dent repair works

A technician works the back of the panel with a set of shaped rods, reading the dent through a striped light board that exaggerates every high and low spot on the surface. The metal is pushed back in dozens of small, controlled movements rather than one — the skill is in knowing how much the panel will relax on its own and stopping exactly there. Where there is no access behind the panel, glue tabs pull from the outside and the high spots are tapped back down.

No filler, no sanding, no primer, no paint. The factory finish is never broken, which is the entire point.

What we use it for

  • Door dings and parking lot damage — the classic case, usually same-day.
  • Hail damage — many shallow dents with intact paint across hood, roof and boot. PDR is dramatically less invasive than refinishing those panels.
  • Trolley and bicycle strikes, provided the paint has not been scraped through.
  • Shallow creases away from a sharp body line.
  • Pre-sale and lease-return preparation, where a refinished panel would show on an inspection and a PDR repair will not.
  • Post-collision finishing — removing minor dents on adjacent panels so they never need to enter the paint booth at all.

Where PDR is the wrong answer

Worth saying plainly, because a shop that claims PDR fixes everything is a shop that will hand you a smooth panel with a cracked clear coat on it.

  • Broken paint. Any chip, crack or scrape through the finish needs conventional repair and refinishing. PDR reshapes metal; it cannot replace paint.
  • Sharp creases on a body line. The metal there is work-hardened by the stamping and has very little left to give.
  • Panel edges with no rear access, and bonded or double-skinned sections.
  • Previously filled or repainted panels. Filler does not move like metal and will crack.
  • Severely stretched metal. Past a point the panel simply has more surface area than it started with, and no amount of pushing returns it.

If your panel falls into one of these, we will tell you and quote the conventional repair instead.

Aluminum panels are a different job

Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, Rivian R1T and R1S, Jaguar and most current luxury SUVs use aluminum outer panels. Aluminum work-hardens rather than stretching, so it is far less forgiving than steel — it has a narrower window before it cracks, it often needs controlled heat, and it does not relax the way a steel panel does after a push.

This is not a technique a steel-only technician can improvise. We hold Jaguar Land Rover and Rivian certification and work aluminum daily, which is the relevant qualification for PDR on these cars as much as for structural repair.

Frequently asked questions

What is paintless dent repair?

PDR reshapes the metal back to its original contour from behind the panel, using specialized rods, tips and reflected light, without filler, sanding or paint. Because the factory finish is never broken, the repair leaves no color-match question, no blend line and no refinish record — the panel is simply the shape it was before.

When can a dent be fixed with PDR, and when can’t it?

PDR works when the paint is intact and the metal has not been stretched past its elastic limit. Good candidates: door dings, hail damage, shopping-trolley dents, creases with unbroken paint, and shallow panel damage with smooth edges. Poor candidates: anything where the paint is cracked, chipped or scraped through; very sharp creases on a body line; damage on a panel edge with no access behind it; and previously filled or repainted panels, where the filler does not move like metal. We tell you which category your dent is in before starting, not after.

Is paintless dent repair better than conventional bodywork?

Where it is possible, almost always — it is faster, it costs less, and it preserves the factory paint, which matters for resale on any car with value. But it is not a universal substitute. If the paint is broken, PDR cannot fix that, and pretending otherwise produces a smooth panel with a visible chip in it. Being an honest judge of which method a given panel needs is the actual skill.

Does PDR affect my car’s value or vehicle history?

This is the strongest argument for it. A conventional repair means a refinished panel, which a paint-depth gauge will find and which shows up in a pre-purchase inspection. PDR leaves the original factory finish intact, so there is nothing to find. On a collector car, a lease return, or anything you plan to sell, that difference is real money.

Can you do hail damage with PDR?

Yes, and hail is where PDR earns its reputation — dozens or hundreds of shallow dents across horizontal panels, all with intact paint. It is exactly the damage profile the technique was developed for, and conventional repair of a hail-damaged roof, hood and trunk lid is dramatically more invasive.

How long does paintless dent repair take?

A single door ding is usually same-day. Multiple panels, or hail across a whole car, run longer — the work is slow and incremental by nature, and rushing it is how you get a panel that looks right in the shop and wrong in daylight. We give you a realistic estimate after seeing the damage.

Will my insurance cover PDR?

Often, particularly for hail and comprehensive claims, and it is usually the outcome the insurer prefers because it costs less than a refinish. We write the estimate and deal with your carrier directly, network or not — and under New York Insurance Law section 2610 the choice of shop is yours regardless of what an adjuster suggests.

Can you repair aluminum panels?

Aluminum PDR is a different discipline from steel — the metal work-hardens rather than stretching, so it is less forgiving and requires its own technique and, often, controlled heat. We do it, and it is directly relevant here because Range Rover, Defender, Rivian, Jaguar and most modern luxury SUVs have aluminum outer panels. A shop without aluminum experience can crack a panel attempting it.
