Before you decide
Window film: performance, warranty and the New York rules
We fit the XPEL PRIME range. PRIME XR is a single-layer nano-ceramic film rejecting up to 85% of infrared heat, blocking 99% of UV, and cutting up to 95% of glare. It is non-metallic, so it does not interfere with phone, GPS, radio or keyless entry signals — which older metallized films did.
Heat rejection rather than darkness is the point. A light film with high infrared rejection will keep a car cooler than a dark film without it, and it stays inside the legal limit.
Warranty
XPEL warrants PRIME films against the failure modes that matter on window film — bubbling, peeling, cracking, adhesive failure and color change. The term depends on the specific product; the PRIME XR FRCA variant carries a lifetime XPEL warranty. We confirm the exact term in writing for the film going on your car, and we register the installation.
What New York actually allows
The New York DMV requires that the windshield and front side windows let through at least 70% of light — they may not block more than 30%. For sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, station wagons and convertibles the same 70% rule applies to the rear side windows. SUVs and vans are treated differently and are not held to that limit on their rear side windows, which is the single most common misunderstanding we hear.
Tint has been checked at the New York annual safety inspection since 1 January 2017, so a film that is too dark is not merely a traffic stop risk — it is an inspection failure. Medical exemptions exist and are applied for through the DMV on form MV-80W.
Connecticut sets its own limits, which differ. We fit to the law of the state the car is registered in, and we will tell you where the line is before we start rather than after you fail an inspection.
