The windscreen stopped being just glass
Ten years ago a cracked windscreen was an annoyance and a modest bill. On a current Range Rover, Rivian, Porsche or any recent luxury vehicle it is a considerably larger job, because of what is now built into and mounted on the glass:
- The forward-facing ADAS camera, which sits behind the mirror and reads lane markings, traffic and distance. Replace the glass and that camera must be recalibrated to the manufacturer’s procedure — a separate operation needing a level floor, the correct targets and documented results.
- Acoustic interlayers that cut cabin noise, which is why a cheap aftermarket screen can make a quiet car noticeably louder.
- Heating elements in the glass or in the wiper park area.
- Head-up display coatings, which require specific glass to work correctly.
- Rain and light sensors bonded to the inside surface.
So the real cost of a stone strike is the glass, plus the calibration, plus the time without the car — and on a vehicle with driver assistance, an uncalibrated camera is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one.
What the film does
XPEL windshield protection film is a multi-layer, optically clear film applied to the outside of the glass. When a stone hits it, the layers absorb and spread the impact energy laterally rather than letting it concentrate at a single point on the glass. The film takes the damage; the screen underneath does not.
It is a sacrificial layer, which is the right way to think about it. It is meant to accumulate the damage your glass would otherwise have taken, and be replaced when it has. Replacing film is a fraction of the disruption of replacing glass and recalibrating a camera.
Who this is actually for
- Highway commuters. I-95, the Hutchinson, the Merritt and the Saw Mill at speed, behind trucks, is exactly the exposure profile that pits and stars a windscreen.
- ADAS-equipped vehicles, where replacement means recalibration.
- Head-up display and acoustic glass cars, where the correct replacement glass is expensive and aftermarket alternatives are a compromise.

Installation
The screen is decontaminated and the surface prepared, the film applied wet in an enclosed bay, and the edges and sensor cut-outs set precisely — the camera window and rain sensor area are the parts that must be exactly right. The car then sits through a proper cure before it goes back out; any moisture haze clears during that window.

What is XPEL windshield protection film?
A multi-layer optically clear film bonded to the outside of the windscreen. It is engineered to absorb and disperse the energy of a stone strike so the impact does not reach the glass, and it is designed to be optically neutral — no distortion, no tint, no effect on wipers, rain sensors or the forward-facing camera behind the mirror.
Why is a modern windscreen worth protecting?
Because it is no longer just glass. On most current luxury and EV models the windscreen carries the forward-facing ADAS camera, and on many it also carries acoustic interlayers, heating elements, head-up display coatings and rain and light sensors. Replacing one means replacing an expensive piece of glass and then recalibrating the camera behind it — a second job with its own equipment, targets and documentation. A film that prevents one strike can pay for itself the first time it does.
Does the film affect visibility or the ADAS camera?
No. It is optically clear and designed to sit in the camera’s field of view without interfering with it. That said, it must be installed correctly — a poor installation with trapped contamination or a misaligned edge in the camera window is a genuine problem, which is why this is not a job to shop on price alone.
Will it stop every chip?
No, and any shop that says otherwise is overselling. The film is engineered to absorb the energy of typical highway debris — the small, constant strikes that eventually star or crack a screen. A large rock at speed, or a direct hit from a truck tire, can still get through. What it reliably prevents is the accumulation of ordinary road damage.
How long does windshield film last?
Typically several years depending on exposure, wiper use and how much debris it takes. It is a sacrificial layer by design: when it has done its job and collected damage, it is removed and replaced — which is the entire point, because replacing the film is a fraction of the disruption of replacing glass and recalibrating a camera.
Does it work with wipers, rain sensors and heated windscreens?
Yes. The film is designed to be compatible with normal wiper operation, rain and light sensors, and heated windscreen elements. We check your specific vehicle’s configuration before installation rather than assuming.
Can you install it on any vehicle?
Most modern vehicles, yes, and coverage continues to expand. Fitment depends on an available pattern for your exact year, make and model, including the correct cut-outs for sensor windows and camera housings. Tell us the vehicle and we will confirm before you commit to anything.
Can I have it done at the same time as paint protection film?
Yes, and most clients do. The windscreen is quoted separately from body PPF because it is a different product with its own considerations, but it is the same visit. Combining it with paint protection film or a ceramic coating means one drop-off rather than three.
What happens if my windscreen is replaced later?
The film is applied to the glass, so a glass replacement means new film. If you are having a windscreen replaced anyway, that is the ideal moment to film the new one — the glass is factory-fresh, with no existing pitting to seal under the film.

Before you decide
Windshield protection film: the case for it, and the warranty
The argument for windshield film is not really about glass. It is about what sits behind the glass on a modern car.
If your car has a forward-facing camera for lane keeping, adaptive cruise or automatic emergency braking — and almost everything built in the last few years does — replacing the windshield is not just a glass job. The camera has to be recalibrated afterwards, to the manufacturer procedure, or the systems that depend on it are aiming at the wrong place. On many cars the calibration costs more than the glass.
That changes the maths on a chipped windshield considerably, and it is why we raise windshield film with people who commute on I-95 through Port Chester and Rye, or on the Hutch, the Merritt and the Saw Mill in late winter when the sanding trucks have been out.
Warranty
XPEL warrants windshield protection film against manufacturing defects; the term depends on the specific product and we confirm it in writing at booking. Registration is required and we register every installation. As with paint film, impact damage is what the product is there to absorb rather than what the warranty reimburses — the film is sacrificial by design, and replacing it is far cheaper than replacing glass and recalibrating a camera.
We are a collision repair facility and we perform ADAS calibration in-house, so if the glass does have to come out, the recalibration afterwards is not somebody else’s problem. More on that in ADAS calibration after a collision.
