Stamford is twenty-five to thirty minutes from our shop depending on which part of the city you are in, and it is the most varied place we serve. A car kept in a Harbor Point tower and a car kept on four acres in North Stamford are subject to almost nothing in common, and the film that makes sense for each is different.

Downtown and Harbor Point: concrete

If your car lives in a structured garage under a tower on Washington Boulevard, Tresser, Atlantic or down at Harbor Point, the dominant threat to your paint is not a road. It is a concrete column.

Structured parking produces a consistent and expensive set of damage: door edges against columns in bays drawn to a minimum width, rocker and sill scrapes from high curbs and sharp ramp transitions, door cup wear from getting in and out in a space too narrow to open a door properly, and long diagonal scuffs on the rear quarter from reversing past a pillar. Almost none of it is driving damage, and a nose-only film package does nothing about any of it.

Add the corporate commuter decks — UBS, Synchrony, the Tresser and Broad Street offices — and a downtown Stamford car is in a garage nine hours a day and overnight.

North Stamford: gravel and trees

High Ridge and Long Ridge Road climb into genuinely rural territory. Long private driveways, frequently gravel or crushed stone, under dense tree cover. That is stone at the rockers and lower quarters every trip in and out, plus sap and bird damage on hoods and roofs through the summer. Different exposure entirely, and it wants rocker coverage and a ceramic coating rather than door edge guards.

The roads in between

The Merritt Parkway exits 33 through 35 and I-95 exits 6 through 9. The Merritt carries no trucks but is a 1930s road with narrow lanes, tight shoulders, stone-faced bridges and heavy winter sanding swept up slowly — from late February into April it sandblasts the nose of anything following at ordinary spacing. I-95 through Stamford does carry trucks, and trucks throw larger debris from higher up. Between them they account for the entire front-end chip pattern we see on Stamford cars.

Anything near the harbor, Shippan or Cove adds marine air on horizontal panels.

What we fit, by where you park

Downtown or Harbor Point: full front in XPEL Ultimate Plus for the highways, and then the full low-and-side package — rockers, lower doors, rear wheel arches, door cups and door edge guards. The second half will prevent more damage than the first.

North Stamford: full front, plus rockers, lower doors and rear arches for the driveway, plus ceramic coating on the hood and roof for the tree cover.

Shippan or Cove: full front, plus coating weighted to the horizontal panels, because marine air is a chemical problem and film does not solve chemical problems.

Matte and frozen factory finishes take XPEL STEALTH, since that paint cannot be polished. Color change is done as XPEL COLOR film rather than vinyl: eight mil, self-healing, sixteen gloss and satin finishes, a ten-year warranty, and it protects the original paint underneath rather than simply covering it. On a leased car, which Stamford has a great many of, that distinction is the entire point.

Correction before film

Whatever is in the paint when the film goes on stays there for as long as the film is on. Garage-kept cars usually carry a haze of wash marks; commuter cars carry chip damage and sand etching. Every car is decontaminated and inspected under proper lighting and corrected where it needs it.

As a collision repair facility rather than a detail shop, we keep the harder cases in one building: a scuff through to primer on a door edge, a bumper corner resprayed elsewhere that does not match, a quarter panel that needs repainting first. We control the cure schedule, so the film goes on when the paint is genuinely ready. If a filmed car takes a hit later, we repair the panel and reinstate the film properly.
