Fort Lee is roughly thirty minutes from our shop over the Mario Cuomo Bridge, or straight across the George Washington Bridge and up the Cross Bronx if you prefer traffic. And the George Washington Bridge is the reason this page exists, because Fort Lee is, without much competition, the worst place in this region to keep paint on the front of a car.

The toll plaza is the problem

The GWB approach and toll plaza combine every single condition that causes stone chipping. Extremely high traffic volume. Heavy truck volume, and trucks throw larger debris than cars from higher up. Constant stop-and-start, which means constant acceleration from a standstill, which is when a tire flings debris hardest. A road surface under permanent repair, so there is always loose aggregate. And Route 4, Route 95 and the Palisades Parkway all feeding into the same few hundred yards.

The result on a Fort Lee car is a front bumper that looks sandblasted within two winters, a leading hood edge that goes matte early, and headlight lenses that haze. We see cars from here with mileage that would not produce this damage anywhere else in the tri-state area.

For a Fort Lee car, a partial front is not a package we would recommend. The film line lands exactly where the debris does. Full bumper, full hood, full fenders, mirrors and headlights, or there is not much point.

High-rise living

The other half of Fort Lee is the towers along Main Street, Center Avenue, Hudson Terrace and Bruce Reynolds Boulevard, which means most cars here live in a structured garage. Structured parking produces its own consistent damage: door edges against columns in bays drawn to a minimum width, rocker and sill scrapes from high curbs and steep ramp transitions, door cup wear from getting in and out in a space too narrow, and diagonal scuffs on the rear quarter from reversing past a pillar.

So a Fort Lee car needs both halves of the job: a serious full front for the bridge, and a full low-and-side package for the garage. Door edge guards and door cups are not optional extras here.

What we fit

Full front in XPEL Ultimate Plus, complete and with the headlights included — a hazed lens is both a night-driving safety issue and an expensive part on any car with adaptive lighting. The topcoat is self-healing, so light wash swirls close up in warm weather.

Then rockers, lower doors, rear wheel arches, door cups and door edge guards for the garage.

Matte and frozen factory finishes take XPEL STEALTH, because that paint cannot be polished once marked. Color change is XPEL COLOR film rather than vinyl — eight mil, self-healing, sixteen gloss and satin finishes, a ten-year warranty, and it protects the original paint underneath instead of simply covering it. On a leased car, of which Fort Lee has many, that is the whole argument.

Correction first

Film preserves whatever is under it. A Fort Lee car almost always arrives with existing chip damage at the nose, and sealing that in for a decade is a poor outcome. We decontaminate and inspect under proper lighting and tell you plainly what the paint needs first.

Because we are a collision repair facility rather than a detail business, the harder cases stay in one building: chips through to primer, a bumper resprayed elsewhere that does not match, a panel that needs repainting before film. We control the cure schedule, and we repair exclusively with OEM parts. If a filmed car takes a hit later, we repair the panel and reinstate the film correctly.

We hold factory certifications for Land Rover, Jaguar, Rivian, Genesis, Infiniti, Nissan, Kia and Stellantis, and we repair every other premium marque that comes through. See also Englewood Cliffs and Englewood.
